Personal Identification Procedures

Once you have applied for SIM with voice capability or SIM with DATA/SMS*, or you have applied to purchase the handset from us, Your personal identification is required. Please upload the image of your personal identification as following the instructions below.

In the case of contracts for SIM with voice capability or SIM with DATA/SMS*, it is necessary to verify the identity of the customer by Mobile Phone Improper Use Prevention Act. And in the case of contracts for IIJmio Supply Service or SIM with DATA/SMS capability, it is necessary to verify the identity of the customer. In the case of purchasing the handsets from us, we will check your identification in order to prevent fraudulent contracts.

Personal Identification Documents

Falsification of or tampering with personal identification documents violates Japanese laws. If falsification or tampering is detected, your contract will be rejected.


We accept the documents below as your personal identification. Please provide one to us.
A document is required including the contracting customer’s name, address, and date of birth, and which matches the information registered to IIJmio. If a piece of information such as the address is written on the back side of the document, the image of the back side is also required.

* If you would make your contract in the shops or stores such like 'BIC SIM counter', the documents for personal identification differ from followings. please check this page for details.

Personal Identification Documents

●In the case of the VOICE eSIM, either one from the following identification documents is acceptable for the application. (Original certificate is needed.)

  • - Driver's license
  • - My Number Card
  • - Residence card
  • - Driver's license record certificate

* Identification documents other than those listed above, such as an insurance card (for National Health Insurance and Employee Health Insurance), are not acceptable.

  • Those whose names are written in kanji on the passport
  • Identification documents are required to confirm your current address and name (Kanji)
  • If the "emergency contact" contains information other than that of the person, hide it with a sticky note and upload the data. If uploaded without hiding, the data will be deleted and the data will be updated.

If your current address differs from the address on your personal identification documents due to a move or other reason, please provide one of the personal identification documents above, and one of the following supplementary documents. Personal identification is not acceptable with supplementary documents only.

Supplementary Personal Identification Documents

  • Residence Certificate (within three months of issue)
    *Do not have your personal identification number (My Number) added when receiving the Residence Certificate.
    *If uploaded showing your personal identification number (My Number), the data will be deleted, and we will request you to re-upload
  • Utilities receipt (within three months of issue, and displaying your current address)
    *Electricity/city gas/waterworks is only acceptable (propane gas receipts etc. are not acceptable)

  • Q
    My personal identification was unsuccessful. What should I do?
    A
    Please check the followings in your personal identification documents or IIJmio registration information. Please click here for registration information.
    • There is no difference in two names from two informations.
    • The addresses of two informations are strictly matched. There is no missing/duplicate/unnecessary characters in the address.
    • There is no difference in two dates of birth from two informations.
    • Uploaded personal identification documents/supplementary documents are all in acceptable documents for personal identification
      • The supplementary document must be a utilities receipt, not a invoice
      • The public works receipt submitted as a supplementary document was not paid by credit card
    The customer can correct his/her surname in the registration information online, but first name and date of birth cannot be editable online. If these need to be corrected, please contact IIJ Support Center.

    If the verification is failed, the registered information can be corrected by the customer once the following notification email arrives at the customer’s registered email address.

    My current address differs from the address in my personal identification document, but I do not have a supplementary document.
    A
    If you cannot provide a supplementary document, please request a new personal identification document with an updated address to the issuer, or provide a different personal identification document which does include your current address.
  • Q
    I cannot register the same Chinese characters in my personal identification document as IIJmio member information. What should I do?
    A
    If there are Chinese characters in your name or address which cannot be registered in our system and cause an error, please enter only the part of the word represented by that Chinese character in Katakana script.
    Please register all Chinese characters that do not cause an error the same as they are displayed on the personal identification documents.
  • Q
    There are only “Last Name” and “First Name” fields available under “Contractor Name (Roman characters)”. How should I enter my middle name?

    Please enter your middle name in the same field with your first name or last name under “Contractor Name (Roman characters)”.
